In the wake of competing technologies, such as WiMAX, the
3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has been developing
a mobile communications system more capable than the existing
technologies, such as GSM/EDGE, W-CDMA, and HSPA, to maintain
the competitiveness of 3G. Key features of this "evolution"
include a significant enhancement in data rates, a reduced
latency for an enhanced end-user-experience, and an improved
coverage and spectral efficiency with an optimized network
architecture providing Carriers with a cost-effective solution.
From a long-term growth perspective, the 3GPP has been challenged
by increased end user demands for higher data rates and support
for new multimedia services and competing technologies, such
as WiMAX. To service the ever-growing end-user demands and
retain its competitiveness, the 3GPP initiated working on
the Long Term Evolution (LTE) of 3G in November 2004. The
set of high level requirements identified for the 3G LTE were:
- A reduced per bit cost
- An increased service provisioning - more services at a
lower cost with an enhanced end user experience
- Flexibility of using the existing as well as new frequency
bands
- A simplified architecture and open interfaces
- A reduced terminal power consumption
Note:
The 3GPP's Long Term Evolution is known by several names,
such as Super 3G, 3G+, 3.9G, and many more terms that would
continue to evolve. In this paper, the 3GPP Long Term Evolution
will be referred to as the 3G LTE.
