Hughes Software Systems Limited (HSS), now known as Flextronics Software Systems Limited was incorporated in India on
30th December 1991 with Hughes
Network Systems (HNS), a unit of Hughes
Electronics Corporation (HUGHES), USA as its principal
shareholder.
HUGHES, a leading global provider of digital
television entertainment, broadband services, satellite-based
private business networks, and video and data broadcasting,
reported revenues of $8.9 billion in 2002.
HNS, a unit of HUGHES, is the world's largest provider of
broadband satellite network solutions for businesses and consumers,
with over 400,000 systems installed in more than 85 countries.
With the opening of the Indian economy in the early nineties,
HUGHES was attracted by the long-term potential of outsourcing
software development and chose to set up a subsidiary in India
to supplement HNS' R&D efforts.
HSS (now Flextronics Software Systems) began its operations in New Delhi with a team
of about 20 professionals and was initially focused on developing
software solutions in the areas of VSAT-based networks for
voice and data, cellular wireless telephony, packet switching,
and multi-protocol routing. Within three years, HSS grew to
240 professionals and in 1995, shifted to its present campus
at Electronic City, Gurgaon, a suburb of New Delhi. Flextronics
Software Systems today is home to over 2500 professionals
working on cutting-edge technologies at its state-of-the-art
facilities spread over Gurgaon, Bangalore, Nuremberg (Germany),
and Beijing (China).
Leveraging its considerable expertise in communications software
gained from providing software services to HNS, Flextronics
Software Systems (then HSS) expanded its business offering
its services to customers and licensing its products worldwide.
Till date, Flextronics Software Systems has delivered services
and products to over 300 customers worldwide and it is now
a leading technology supplier in the convergent market place.
In 1998, Flextronics Software Systems set up its development
center in Bangalore to focus on development of software for
the Internet and Internet Protocol-based solutions and applications.
Since 2004, the development center has grown into a full-fledged
campus, equipped with state-of the-art facilities, accommodating
nearly 600 professionals.
In 1999, Flextronics Software Systems (then HSS) initiated
its Voice over Packet business and took an early lead in the
technology that has transformed the communications market.
HSS (now Flextronics Software Systems) went public the same year via a book building
issue, a first of its kind in India.
To cater to increasing market demand, HSS (now Flextronics Software Systems) expanded
operations in the USA by opening several offices in 1999.
As a part of its continued expansion, HSS (now Flextronics Software Systems) opened
marketing offices in U.K and Germany in the year 2000 and

employee initiatives. Flextronics Software Systems has twice
been voted among the best employers to work for in India,
in succession (2001 and 2002), by a Hewitt Associates-Business
Today survey.
In 2001, HSS (now Flextronics Software Systems) was nominated as “The Emerging
Company of the Year” by The Economic Times (India’s
premier business daily). HSS (now Flextronics Software Systems), in 2003, was also
voted as one of the 10 most respected companies in India in
a survey conducted by the Businessworld magazine. These rankings

Technology in Human Resource Management for the year 2001.
The award was in recognition of its initiatives in using IT
to create and drive its people practices.

sector, extending its understanding of networks and the end-user
needs of communication service providers through its 24X7
technical helpdesk.
In 2003, HSS (now Flextronics Software Systems) set up its global delivery center
in Nuremberg, Germany to bring the near shore outsourcing
option to cater to the growing demands of the European wireless
equipment providers.
Assessed at SEI-CMMI Level 5 for all its development centers
and all projects and products in 2003, Flextronics Software
Systems has been an ISO 9001:2000 company since 1996. In addition,
