The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is designed to enable hosts (DHCP clients) on a network to dynamically obtain an IP address from the DHCP server. In addition to this, various configuration parameters can be retrieved from the server, thus reducing the load on the administrator of an IP network. DHCP uses UDP as its transport protocol. The DHCP solution is a portable implementation of the Server and the Relay Agent components, as specified in RFC 2131 and RFC 2132. The DHCP solution reduces the time-to-market for OEMs and VARs who wish to incorporate the DHCP functionality into their switching/routing devices.
