Framing Protocol

Aricent offers Framing protocols complaint to latest 3GPP Release’99 specifications. These help OEMs build the following nodes faster and at lower cost:

  • Radio Network Controller (RNC)
  • Node B
  • 3G MSC

Framing protocol (FP) is a user plane protocol and forms Layer-1 of the radio network layer of access stratum in a UMTS network. They provide an important synchronization function between higher-layer radio access protocols (for example RLC, MAC) and the timing requirements of the radio transmission system.

Aricent provides Framing Protocols for following interfaces:

  • Iu –UP (Iu-User Plane)
  • Iub
  • Iur

Iu –User Plane (Iu-UP) protocol for the Iu Interface

Iu UP Protocol forms layer 1 of the user plane of the radio network layer in access stratum. It operates directly on the transport layer stack at RNC and CN. The data bearer(s) of transport network user plane provides data transfer services to the Iu UP layer.

Separate packages of Iu-UP available for the RNC and the Core Network.

Interfaces

Aricent’ Iu-UP software interface with following components at RNC and CN side:

Framing Protocol for Iur and Iub

On the Iur and Iub interfaces Framing Protocol is used for uplink and downlink data transfer.
Framing Protocol for Dedicated Channel enables the RNC to exchange user data frames with UEs serviced by its own Node Bs as well as remote Node Bs. The Framing Protocol is also capable of performing certain control functions like timing adjustment and synchronization. Updates to the radio parameters can also be done through FP.

Framing Protocol for Common Transport on Iur interface handles flow control to RNC, and on Iub interface it handles synchronization and timing adjustment apart from data transfer between Node B and RNC for Iub-Common Channel.

Interfaces

The context of different Iur and Iub framing protocols in UMTS architecture is explained in the figure below:
