Hughes Software Systems (HSS), India’s number one communications software company, formally inaugurated its Internet Development center in Bangalore today. Set up with an initial investment of US$ 2 million, the center aims to maximize HSS’ capabilities in developing products and solutions based on the exponentially growing Internet.

With a planned strength of 80 personnel by the year 1999, HSS aims to develop a substantial product portfolio out of this new facility. The company has already launched 2ndlook, India’s first web-based document review software, one of the first products developed at this center. HSS plans to launch a slew of cyber products that integrate network solutions with advanced web technologies for use by telecom operators, Internet service providers and telecom equipment suppliers.

Dedicating the facility to the cause of emerging technologies, Mr Pradman Kaul, President and Chief Operating Officer, Hughes Network Systems, said, "We at Hughes believe in building a tradition of excellence through a commitment to innovation and technological leadership, a vision that has driven our growth worldwide. I am sure that with the Internet Development center at Bangalore, Hughes Software Systems will be the premier center of excellence for Internet technologies globally."

Mr Dewang Mehta, executive director, Nasscom and member spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s IT Task Force complimented HSS and said, "The TaskForce has identified Internet, E-Commerce and communication software as some of the key areas for software development and we are happy that Hughes Software Systems has taken the lead in that direction at its Bangalore facility and has aggressively developed products for the global communications software market."

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Arun Kumar, President & Managing Director, Hughes Software Systems, said, "Our investment in the center forms the core of our Internet business strategy. We view this center as a joint venture between HSS and the city of Bangalore towards integrating technology tools and world class infrastructure. With Bangalore’s atmosphere of excellence and leadership in software engineering, HSS’ Internet Development center will propel the company into a commanding position in Internet based products and solutions."
