Hughes Software Systems unveils its Broadband Protocol Stack products at Supercomm`99

June 7, 1999

Hughes Software Systems (HSS), India's #1 communications software company, announced the offering of the broadband version of two of its highly acclaimed narrowband Stacks, the Broadband V5 Stack for the access network (AN) and service node (SN) and the Broadband SS7 Stack for the network side.

The Broadband products from HSS will facilitate communication companies worldwide to evolve into broadband networks, capable of providing higher bandwidth for delivering integrated voice, video and data communications.

The HSS Broadband V5 (VB5) offering facilitates time to market by providing the UNI SAAL layer under the VB5 stack and a full set of applications over and above the protocol stack. It will also provide Q3 interface for telecom management network TMN access thus offering a complete solution.

The second product, Broadband SS7 (B-SS7) stack, provides inter working with asynchronous transfer mode ( ATM) switching systems at the network interface. This offering comes with Signaling ATM Adaptation Layer (SAAL) ,Broadband Message Transfer Part (MTP3-b), Broadband ISDN user part (B-ISUP) to provide basic bearer and supplementary services, Broadband signaling connection control part (B-SCCP) to provide connectionless and connection oriented signaling connection control services and transaction capability application part (TCAP) to provide the same transaction control as in a narrow band network. HSS offering is flexible and allows any combination of these layers to be ordered as required by the customer.

HSS is committed to the evolving needs of our customers. At HSS we are investing heavily to bring the benefits of convergence to our customers. The broadband suites along with their narrowband counterparts from HSS will shorten time to profit for telcos and OEMs and deliver the benefits of higher bandwidth and speed to the end user.,' said Mr. Arun Kumar, President and Managing Director, HSS.

The ProtoQuick VB5 product can prove extremely useful for Small and Medium OEMs for fiber to the home (FTTH), Switched Video Broadcasting (SVB), Video On Demand (VOD), Large OEMs for their access products, T & M (Test and Measurement), OEMs with products in telecom segment and private operators in new markets.

'HSS was the first in the world to make a commercial delivery of the VB5 AN stack way back in Dec,'98 to one of its valued clients, an European Telecom giant. We feel excited to be the fore-runner in the standard-based broadband access technology.', added Kumar.

The VB5 protocol certified by ETSI and ITU-T standardizes broadband interface between AN and SN. Typical Applications of VB5 include IP Router, ATM virtual channel(VC) switch, FTTH, VOD, SVB, Virtual Path (VP) leased line etc. These applications can be used to provide high bandwidth services like Broadband internet connectivity, video conferencing, tele-medicine/tele-surgery, space applications, video servers etc.

In SS7 area, HSS is now developing a number of interworking functions between narrowband SS7 and broadband SS7 as well as between SS7 and ISDN, ATM etc..
