Hughes Software Systems unveils Broadband V5 Product Range

HSS offers a full range of solutions for broadband access between a Service Node (SN) and an Access Network

June 8, 1999

Hughes Software Systems (HSS), India’s #1 communications software company, today announced offering of a whole range of standard based software solutions for Broadband Access between an Access Network and a Service Node.

HSS has added the Broadband V5 protocol Stack (commonly known as the VB5 Stack), for both the access network as well as the service node, to its profile of protocol stack products.

The HSS offering facilitates time to market by cutting down the customer’s development time by providing the SAAL layer under the stack and a full set of application software, needed both at Access network as well as at the Service node over and above the protocol stack. HSS VB5 stacks will also provide Q3 interface for TMN access thus offering a complete solution. VB5 interface is ATM based. It supports B-ISDN Services, Non B-ISDN ATM based services and narrowband services via V5.1/V5.2.

"HSS was the first in the world to make a commercial delivery of the VB5 AN stack way back in Dec,’98 to one of its valued client, an European Telecom giant’, said Mr. Arun Kumar, President and Managing Director of HSS. " We feel excited to be the fore-runner in the standard-based broadband access technology between the AN and the SN".

VB5 protocol is the effort by ETSI and ITU-T to standardize the broadband interface between Access Network (AN) and Service Node (SN). VB5 Interface is the recommended standard by bodies like FSAN, MSF, DAVIC, which comprise of leading carriers, equipment manufacturers and telco service providers.

Typical Applications where VB5 can be used include IP Router, ATM VC switch, Fiber To The Home (FTTH), Video on Demand (VOD), Switched Video Broadcasting (SVB), VP leased line etc. These applications can be used to provide high bandwidth services like Broadband internet connectivity, video conferencing, tele-medicine/tele-surgery, space applications, video servers etc.

The ProtoQuick VB5 product can prove extremely useful for Small and Medium OEMs for FTTx, Switched Video Broadcasting (SVB), Video On Demand (VOD), Large OEMs for their access products, T & M (Test and Measurement), OEMs with products in telecom segment, private operators in new markets.

HSS had made the first protocol stack product offering in ’97 by its V5 range of protocol stacks. Over the next about two years it has added SS7 Stack for both narrowband as well as for the broadband network with multiple variants, the ISDN stack, the H.323 Stack for the VOIP market and the GR303 Stack for the American market. In the datacom area it offers the Frame Relay stack, the range of ATM Stacks (UNI, NNI, PMP etc) and the full SAAL layers (UNI & NNI). Its expertise in INAP to offer a complete IP product, working experience in mobile technologies, general switching software and TMN facilitates its products to be of international standard. HSS also offers various interworking functions and gateway solutions for the communication networks of tommorow.
