Mobile WiMAX, the 802.16e IEEE standard, is creating new
markets for mobile broadband services and is providing a strong
mobility platform to help accelerate convergence. Mobile WiMAX
is capable of providing up to 31 miles of linear service and
shared data rates up to 70 Mbps. In addition, Mobile WiMAX
provides a wireless extension to last mile broadband access.
Today Carriers, Service Providers, and OEMS are adopting Mobile
WiMAX to sustain business growth through increased clientele
and improved ARPU.
As the disruptive innovation of Mobile WiMAX gains momentum,
OEMs and Service Providers face a combination of business
and technical hurdles that need to be overcome before they
can successfully lead the Mobile WiMAX wave. Such challenges
include:
Business Challenges
- The need for aggressive time-to-market: Accelerated equipment
development to utilize the early mover advantage
- The need for constantly evolving expertise: Professionals
with expertise and experience which are constantly updated
to meet the demands of the emerging technology.
- The need for cost effectiveness: Efficiently manage the
costs of developing, testing, and maintenance of WiMAX systems
Technical challenges
- The need to keep abreast of the WiMAX Forum's evolving
standards.
- The need to address the various issues, such as handover,
roaming, routing, and security, prevalent in cellular technologies
- The need to address the various issues involved in interoperability
of the ASN Gateway with the Base Station (BS), the Home
Agent (HA), and the Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting
(AAA) servers ASN Gateway, a key component in enabling mobility
in WiMAX networks, connects multiple BSs and interfaces
with other network elements, such as AAA servers, HAs, and
DHCP servers to provide seamless mobility to end users.
- The need for a strong expertise in Network Processor-based
design approach
Aricent, a global leader in wireless technology innovations and
a member of the WiMAX Forum, has extensive expertise in rapid
design, development, and integration of ASN Gateways.
