System Design and Implementation of an ATM Network

Opportunity

This particular assignment demanded a full range of Frame Relay and ATM equipment interconnection, spanning campus and wide area applications by using private lines and/or public ATM services. The project also had the daunting task of designing a complex ATM-based backbone network.

Network Interworking

Aricent Solution

Aricent had been involved extensively in the development of this Switch to form a core design team for architecture designs, hardware and software design of the components, network design, protocol design, design and implementation of drivers, diagnostics and provide support for operating system services.

Aricent was primarily involved in the following, design of Adaptation modules to support multiple access offerings such as Native ATM, FR based on ATM UNI 3.0 and FR Forum standards, design of ATM services based on Traffic Types (UBR, CBR, VBR, VBR-nrt, VBR-rt), Connection Admission Control, Congestion Management, Traffic Policing, design and specification of the hardware architecture for the ATM switching and adaptation modules.

Other important modules comprised defining System Software Architecture and specification of protocols for nodal protocols, definition of Core APIs to allow transparent network access to multiple access protocols, implementation of IP over ATM for switch management (RFC 1577), fast redundancy switchover to optimize the time taken by the backup module to take-over from the primary module.

Network Management and Access Services

The product is provided with a comprehensive package of network management tools, supporting and enhancing its basic functionality. The product family provides a wide selection of network access services.

  • Frame Relay to Frame Relay PVC (via Broadband Switch) and Frame Relay to ATM PVC (via Broadband Switch)
  • ATM to ATM PVC (via Broadband Switch)
  • T1 to T1 circuit transport (via Broadband Switch) and T1 to ATM circuit emulation service (via Broadband Switch)
  • E1 to E1 circuit transport (via Broadband Switch) and E1 to ATM circuit emulation service (via Broadband Switch)
  • Frame Relay PVC, SVC and Transparent PVC (via Interface Switch)
  • SNA/SDLC (Serial or Token Ring) (via Remote node or Interface Switch)
  • X.25 PVC and X.25 SVC (via Remote node or Interface Switch)
  • IP over Ethernet or Token Ring (via Remote node or Interface Switch)

Success Story

The productline Aricent assisted the client with turned out to be an award winning ATM Network Switch (BX5000), which at present is used as enterprise wide area backbone network for data, voice and video applications. It supports full redundancy, hot swappable modules, robust permanent virtual connection routing and state-of-the-art network management ensuring that mission critical applications are not interrupted.
