Mobile ATM-GSM Interworking

Opportunity

Emerging standards for mobile ATM ("M" ATM) networks add network level support for terminal mobility to existing ATM networks. These mobility enhanced ATM networks use the ATM switching and control infrastructure to provide seamless wired and wireless networking. "M" ATM networks support new ATM wireless access technologies for end-to-end wireless ATM ("W" ATM) networks, as well as existing non-ATM wireless access technologies for backward compatibility with existing wireless networks.

Aricent having studied the requirements of extending the ATM network to support ATM by adding support for Location Management and Handoff was involved in the architectural design and specification for the support of non-ATM wireless access technologies over an M-ATM and is demonstrating the design through a prototype development of the Mobile ATM-GSM Base Station. The concept of mobile ATM has been proven through its capability to support both ATM and non-ATM wireless access technologies.

Aricent Solution

Aricent was involved in defining the specifications for interworking between Mobile ATM and GSM Protocol mapping between Mobile ATM and GSM; Designing and architecting the Mobile ATM-GSM base station. This would enable the wireless ATM to extended in such a manner that a GSM mobile will be able to make a phone call to another GSM mobile using the mobile ATM network. Aricent's role in the project was to develop the Inter-working function (IWF).

Other software services rendered to the assignment included the following:

  • Basic call establishment/release services between two GSM mobiles across the core wire-less ATM network
  • Support for call handoff from one IWF to another IWF
  • Roaming for the GSM mobile from PLMN to ATM network

Aricent was further responsible for providing the software for the IWF. The work involved development of BSSMAP and DTAP protocols including Mobility Management and Call Control protocols and also the SS7 APIs used to interface with the E1 card. The protocol work was carried out in SDL using Telelogic SDT tool. In order to carry out the development at Aricent , a Siemens protocol analyser was used to simulate the BSS and the mobile for testing.
