FR Adaptation & Switching Module of an ATM Switch

Opportunity

The Aricent's FRASM project came as an opportunity for Aricent's to experience new product development in high technology areas. This particular product family demanded a full range of frame relay and ATM equipment interconnection, spanning campus and wide area applications by using private lines and/or public ATM services.

Aricent's Solution

Aricent's had the complete responsibility for the delivery of the Frame Relay Adaptation and Switching Module and was responsible for architecture designs, hardware and software design of the components, network design, protocol design, design and implementation of drivers, diagnostics and provide support for operating system services.

The Aricent's developed ATM switch could support networks comprising Broadband Swicthing nodes, Interface Switching nodes Remote frame relay access devices. The protocols supported by this network would include protocols such as X.25, SNA/SDLC, IP over Ethernet or Token Ring, ATM, unstructured T1 or E1 circuit emulation and Frame Relay over ATM backbones, Frame Transparent over frame relay trunks over a wide area network. All the different network elements are managed by a single network management system.

The product is provided with a comprehensive package of network management tools, supporting and enhancing its basic functionality. The network management functionality includes:

  • Use of HP OpenView (HPOV) to allow integration of network management applications with third party network management applications
  • Avoidance of proprietary network management in favor of widely used standards, such as SNMP, allowingwide access from non-proprietry network management products
  • Extensive use of user friendly Graphical User Interfaces, for example, the drag-and-drop creation paradigm
  • Provision of FCAPS -Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, and Security features.
Other important services which Aricent rendered included defining the Software Architecture for the FR adaptation and switching module, designing the hardware architecture, component selection and simulation/benchmarking for the switching modules, Connection management - establishment, maintenance and release of FR/ATM connections, Switching of incoming FR traffic to outgoing ATM VC (one-to-one multiplexing and one-to-many multiplexing modes), Implementation of policing and traffic shaping of incoming FR traffic and outgoing ATM traffic Design

In the testing sphere, Aricent was primarily involved in the Design Verification Testing and Hardware Verification Testing (HVT) for the ATM UNI Adaptation and Switching Module and the Frame Relay Adaptation and switching modules.

Success Story

The Frame Relay Adaptation and Switching Module provided non-ATM Frame Relay access on the ATM backbone switch. The HNS award winning ATM Network Switch (BX5000) is used as enterprise wide area backbone network for data, voice and video applications. Full redundancy, hot swappable modules, robust permanent virtual connection routing and state-of-the-art network management ensure that mission critical applications are not interrupted.

These Frame Relay switches have been deployed in more that 50 countries all over the world. One of the deployments crossed 200 switches in a single network. Most of these networks are being used heavily on daily basis for banking/financial transactions, government transaction, Internet and for various other real time applications.
