Opportunity
The future of "last mile" communications
is broadband wireless. However, the current wireless
technology products lack scalability and economics of
deployment. Additionally, they offer inflexible asymmetric
downstream/upstream capacity, low bandwidth and only
Line-of-Sight (LOS) operations. The new broadband wireless
technology based upon smart-antenna MIMO (multiple-input,
multiple-output) technology addresses these issues and
provides the advantage of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) fixed
wireless broadband operations.
A USA based company has conceived a wireless access
network providing broadband wireless Internet access
and telephony services to residential, SOHO, small and
medium business customers.
To leverage the full benefits of new wireless technology,
network management plays a crucial role in providing
reliable, efficient, secure, easily installable and
configurable services to network subscribers. Aricent
is developing the management solution for this
network.
Aricent Solution
Aricent is developing following two distinct management
components:
System Manager
Its a mid level manager and its facilitates managing
the services and network form NOC. The main features
of the system manager are the following:
- Element management for Network equipments
- Network management for the sub-network associated
with Network Gateway Unit (NGU)
- Service management for provisioning of the customer
premises equipment (CPE) and its services
- NGU Startup and Initialization
- BTS Initialization and shutdown
- BTS Software/firmware updates
- CPE Initialization
- CPE Decommission
The management is based upon SNMPv3 protocol. The System
Manager is being developed in C/C++ and SDL on Solaris
2.7 Platform. It uses SNMP Research toolkit for Manager
and Agent Development and TimesTen in memory RDBMS.
Network Manager
The network manager implements local NMS/NOC and provides
network management functionality with a graphical user
interface. It interacts with System Manager to manage
the network. The main features of the Network Manager
are the following:
- Fault Management to help locate and prevent network
problems
- Configuration Management to set up the network elements
to perform as desired
- Accounting Management to measure the network resource
usage
- Performance Management to measure the network performance
- Security Management to control access to network
resources
The management is based upon SNMPv3 protocol. The Network
Manager is being developed in Java on Solaris 2.7 platform.
It uses AdventNet WebNMS framework, Management Builder
and SNMP Toolkit.
Success Story
Aricent has contributed the NM solutions to our clients'
pioneering MIMO-OFDM technology, which uses multiple
antennas to both transmit and receive radio signals.
MIMO-OFDM is the only technology that will allow service
providers to deploy a Broadband Wireless Access (BWA)
system that has truly Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) functionality.
Aricent ensured a smooth-functioning of this 160 plus person-months
project and delivered the System Manager and Network
Manager solutions in the first half of the year for
System Integration and Acceptance of client. These solutions
were accepted by the client with only minor modifications.
