Element Manager for WDM (SONET) Network Elements

Opportunity

Wave Division Multiplexing technologies has provided more Bandwidth to transmission systems than was ever imagined earlier. WDM is a follow on of SONET and transmits information over Fibre using multiple wavelength beams simultaneously. Our client, an optical networking OEM wanted Aricent to design and develop an Element Manager to manage the Optical Cross Connects and Multiplexers.

Aricent Solution

The solution-path undertaken by Aricent to convert this opportunity into a success story comprised working on an Element Management system based on a distributed architecture using CORBA and Management applications being developed using JAVA. The management applications required software skills in C++ and JAVA and Ilog for the Graphical User Interface. The other software to be used in this project was ObjectStore object oriented database for storage of objects with persistence.

The project challenge was to provide single point operations access to manage a diverse high-end optical transmission equipment distributed geographically.

Success Story

This 300 plus person-years project involved TL1 native agent to CORBA implementation. CORBA allows distribution of objects and development of distributed managers that can re-use the same Objects using various CORBA services. We designed an architecture that provided for Java applets that can be used from remote locations for managing the Network Elements. Although the Element Manager was a Java based GUI application residing over a CORBA backbone, it also allowed the Network Elements to be managed by higher level Integrated Network Managers by providing for TL1 and OSI (Q3) interfaces.

The following are the special technologies that Aricent has provided expertise for in this project :

  • CORBA based distributed solutions for Network Management
  • Tree and Tabular Combined Notation (TTCN) based Automated Testing Tools
  • Telecommunication Management Network (TMN) Q-Adapter implementation
  • Protocol conversion (TL1 - CORBA, TL1 - CMIP)
  • Java based client development with CORBA interface
  • Object Oriented Database

Some of the other functionality that were developed for this Manager included: Operator Interface Management, Geographical map and Topology display, Configuration Management, Alarm Management, Security Management and Fault Management.

Despite the fact that the switch-development was done in parallel with EMS software development, and market dynamics required changes in function priorities, the project was completed on schedule. Our client benefitted not only from reducing their time to market but also earned laurels from its end-customers-which termed it as the 'most complete EMS solution'.
