Satellite Base Station for Mobile Satellite Communication
This case study highlights the work involved in overall system
characterization, system implementation and the simulation,
testing and integration of various protocol layers of modern
satellite communication systems.
Opportunity
This assignment focussed on 'Mobile Satellite Communication
Systems' was entrusted upon Aricent , by HNS. As always Aricent
accepted the challenge of foraying into a new technology domain,
which gave Aricent the opportunities of developing expertise
on various protocol layers of modern satellite communication
systems. The main modules, which Aricent was principally responsible
for included developing software solutions for- Satellite,
base Station, GSM Network Management Solution, Handset Software
Development and Multi-mode Handset Software.

Aricent Solution
Aricent was involved right from overall system characterization,
system implementation to the simulation and the testing and
integration of these layers.
Satellite Base Station for Mobile satellite communication
This module forms a major portion of projects being implemented
by Aricent for medium-earth orbit and geostationery satellites
communication systems.
Aricent had the following key responsibilities in these projects
:
- Adaptation of GSM air interface protocol specifications
for satellite communication
- Validation of these protocol specifications
- Implementation of the air interface protocol on the Radio
Sub System
- Building simulators for the Satellite Gateway and for
the user terminals
- Building a network management system for the satellite
access node
- Building equipment monitoring and control systems
- Ground segment integration system
Tools/Environments
Aricent's team used OO tools for network management software
and simulator software development. Tools included Rational
Rose for capturing OO Designs and Visual Workshop for C++.
Platforms used were SUN and HP Unix workstations and servers.
- The SDT tool from Telelogic has been used for SDL construction
of Air interface protocol -specification, simulation and
verification
- The Radio Subsystem Software (including the air interface
protocol) were implemented on a real time embedded platform
consisting of multiple i960 processors, VxWorks Operating
System and C as the coding language
- Network Management applications for Mobilsat Program were
developed on a SUN's Solistice Enterprise Manager framework.
Network Management protocols used in the assignment included
SNMP, CMIP as well as custom designed protocols. Oracle
was used as the backend DBMS
- Aricent'sMobilsat Team further used agent development
tool kits from SNMP Research for agent development
The diagram above gives a high level description of the Satellite
Base Station for the Mobile Satellite project. The SBS is
subdivided into channel management module, satellite resource
management module and Operational and Maintenance Center.
The channel management modules are i-960 based cards running
vxWorks. The satellite resource management and network management
is built on Solaris environment using SunSparc workstations.
Aricent was responsible for development of a major portion
of the software on the Satellite Base Station including the
air interface protocol stack, call control and distribution
executive, resource and network management module and the
Operations and Maintenance center software. A team of around
160 engineers worked on the Satellite Base Station subsystem.
Success Story
With this assignment, Aricent proved its capabilities on
software engineering expertise for protocol specification
validation, system analysis and design, system integration
and regression testing, building wireless network elements
coupled with skills to integrating solutions with DSPs, managing
RF, IF and baseband ASICs. Aricent delivered excellent results
and not only earned laurels for this project, but also got
another couple of assignments.
GSM Network Management
System
This case study highlights the Aricent expertise involved
in building a NMS for a GSM system, complimented with FCAPS
functionality for managing Base Station Equipment and resources.

Handset Software Development
Aricent engineered a major portion of software for a dual
mode handset. This case study showcases our expertise on building
the MMI, the signaling protocol stack for satellite communication
(analogous to GSM stack), FAX/Data protocol and the telephony
application. Read more
Multi-mode Handset Software
This case study highlights the Aricent expertise in developing
a Multi-Mode User Terminal (handset) that supports satellite
communication and cellular communication (D-AMPS, IS-136,
and Satellite). Read more
